When we speak of prayer, we understand it as an intimate and affectionate contact between us and a God that we know who loves us; a step forward, in an inter-subjective, profound and warm bond, with and within the Lord, who offers Himself as a lifelong companion.
On a spiritual level, man, according to the thought of St. Augustine, is like an arrow that has been shot towards the Universe (God), toward a center of gravity that irresistibly attract us. The closer it gets to the Universe, the greater its speed. The more we love God, the more we want to love him. The more we relate to him, the more we want to relate to him.
There is a law of training that is valid for physical sports as well as “spiritual sports”: the more intense the training the greater the results.
We carry in our souls spiritual abilities that are dormant due to the lack of training. God has planted a seed that is gift-power, capable of wonderful blossoms. It is a profound and filial aspiration for God. If we put this aspiration in motion, as it meets is object and nears its center, the more intense will be the desire, the greater will be its weight, and consequently the greater will be the velocity.
Daily experience proves this. Those who have been alone with the Lord for a few days will find that, when they get back to their everyday routine, a new force pushes them more and more toward the encounter with God. In this way God´s weight becomes heavier and will draw them with greater attraction toward Him, while the world and life in general will be “filled” with God.
